MX Ride for the Cure a HUGE Success!
MX Ride for the Cure a HUGE Success! Written by Brett Lee
The first ever MX Ride for the Cure has raised over $19,000 to go towards breast cancer research. The day long event held Sunday, May 16th at the Bear Creek Motocross Track saw hundreds of laps being added up as riders from 6 to 60 years old did their part to help end the suffering on families when Mom or Dad is hit with breast cancer.
"Knowing the popularity of Motocross in the Okanagan area as well as the strong family dynamic associated with the sport, I wasn't surprised by how quickly the teams filled up," said Chris Pearson of Canadian Kawasaki Motors, "With that being said, I think that all of us were amazed when we calculated the overall amount raised for Breast Cancer during the event. Though the goal of the event is to raise money, even more important is educating our children on the importance of being involved, of trying to make a difference.
20 teams of 6 to 10 riders completed laps in four categories including big and little bikes and beginner to expert abilities. Riders collected per lap pledges and the $19,000 total at the end of the day was a pleasant surprise for everyone involved.
"I was totally astounded by the $19,000 that was raised!" says Michelle De Sousa of the BC Cancer Foundation, Southern Interior. "I'd like to thank Jeanine Acheson, Chris Pearson and everyone involved for their inspiring hard work and generosity. How wonderful that they were able to combine their passion for Motocross with their desire to make a difference in the lives of people dealing with cancer in their community! Breast cancer is a terrifying disease and the Kelowna Dirt Bike Club wanted to do something about it - and they certainly did! Wow! Thank you!"
Jeanine Acheson Vice-President of the Kelowna Dirt Bike Club is pleased and proud of the effort the club has put into a very successful event. Motocrossers are a strongly knit community and came together to prove this on May 16th. This event greatly benefited the community and gave dirt bikers from all over unity and enjoyment of a sport they love. With this great event the Kelowna Dirt Bike Club seeks a partnership with the Regional District in allowing us lease renewals to continue to benefit the club and provide events such as the MX Ride for the Cure in a controlled, enclosed safe environment.
